Dear Parents of an SRM Student.

The New Mexico Department of Public Education is asking parents of students in K-2 to fill out a survey that asks how you feel about certain things in their child’s teacher’s classroom.  The Educator Parent Survey consists of ten questions aligned to the NMTEACH EES Observation Rubric.  Your responses will identify what your teachers and principals are doing well and also areas in which they need help.  Honest and thoughtful feedback will be most helpful for teachers and school leaders as they move forward.

Option 1-To take the survey online:

  • You should begin by choosing your student’s Teacher from the drop down menu.
  • After that, choose the Grade Level under the Class drop down menu.
  • If A Spanish language survey is needed please switch the language of the survey in the drop down menu at the beginning of the survey.
  • Once you have completed the survey questions, please click on the blue submit button and it will close in a few seconds.

Option 2-If you require a paper survey, please request a paper survey from your child’s teacher.

Option 3-If you prefer to take the survey in person at school, our Computer lab will be available in the morning before and afternoon after school.

Your participation in this survey is greatly appreciated.  All answers are confidential and anonymous.

Thank You

Ms. Collaros (IC)

------------------------

  • Ir a NMTEACH Parent Survey

Gracias.

Srta. Collaros

The SRM Tech Club is making a HUGE SPLASH this Spring with our SeaPerch Underwater Robot Challenge!  We’ve finished building our Robots, and our 5 Student Teams of 4th & 5th Graders will be competing against other APS Elementary Student Teams in an exciting upcoming event.  Teams will gather at the West Mesa Aquatic Center on Tuesday, May 9th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to navigate underwater obstacle courses and participate in sprint racing events with their Robots.  Student teams will also present to a panel of judges, and discuss their building/learning process.

We may have as many as 15 teams of elementary students competing with their self-built SeaPerch Robots, and it promises to be an exciting day! This has been an incredible collaboration with our partners at West Mesa and Valley High Schools, and an excellent mentorship opportunity for secondary students. To our knowledge, this is the first SeaPerch competition for elementary students in the nation, and another example of how APS schools—especially our STEM/STEAM programs—continue to innovate.

In April we will be kicking off Incredible Kids month, which is a celebration of all of our SRM students and their unique talents, personalities, and achievements. The goal of Incredible Kids month is two fold: to boost student self-esteem and encourage parent participation.

Parents, family friends, relatives, etc. are encouraged to write letters to their kids praising them for their special qualities. The letters are to be sent to school and given to the teacher.

Every teacher should set aside time each week to read the letters aloud to the class so that every student can be recognized and feel special.

After the letters have been read, I will post the letters in the "Hall of Fame."

Students can also write letters to their peers outlining what qualities they admire about one another.

Thank you in advance for helping me make each and every student feel special and appreciated!

Sincerely,

MARCH 31, 2017.

A few years ago, I was at S.R. Marmon Elementary School on the first day of testing, and what I saw really stayed with me. The halls were lined with kindergarteners, first and second graders as well as staff and parents who were cheering on the older students as they walked the “red carpet” (actually red paper) on their way to class. The third, fourth and fifth graders were being treated like celebrities, and they were eating it up – smiling, waving, some even wore sunglasses.

I love that approach to testing. Whether it’s walking the red carpet, coming together for a PARCC pancake breakfast like they’re doing at Grant Middle School, hosting spirit assemblies and test prep celebrations as so many of our schools do, or simply offering support and advice, our teachers and staff are great about helping ease anxiety during testing season.

Regardless of how you feel about state-mandated tests, we want our students to do well. And pats on the back, words of encouragement, tips for success go a long way.

So thank you. Thanks for reminding students at all levels to get a good night’s sleep – something they should do all the time, but especially during the next few weeks.

Thanks for reminding them to eat a good breakfast that includes protein – or for sending them to the cafeteria where they can get a healthy meal if they can’t at home. Another good habit for the whole school year, but one that will go a long way as students tackle challenging test questions.

Thanks for the advice you provide test takers – don’t rush, read questions carefully, answer all questions, make your best guess when you don’t know.

Thanks for helping remind students with test anxiety to take deep breaths and trust in themselves.

Thanks for rearranging schedules to be as accommodating as possible for students, even when it's not as convenient for staff.

Special thanks to our APS assessment team which is part of the Office of Accountability and Reporting. It takes a lot of work to administer these tests to tens of thousands of students each year, and we appreciate all the support they provide to our students, schools and staff.

 Ready, set, test!
