Procedures for Lockdown and Shelter in place

Susie Rayos Marmon Elementary is as prepared, as possible, should a lockdown or shelter in place occur.

The school has a site safety plan in place.  Each staff member has the site safety plan within their possession and displayed in their classroom. The exterior doors are locked through out the school day. Visitors must sign in at the office.  Staff and students have been instructed on protocols and procedures.  Practice drills have been held, and will continue to be held.

The site safety plan is available in the office for your viewing.

The following are general procedures in place for lockdown and shelter in place.

A lockdown is ordered when a dangerous person is on or near a campus.

What happens during a lockdown:

Students are moved out of the hallways and into the nearest classrooms immediately. Students must stay in those rooms until they are cleared to leave by public safety personnel. All school exterior and classroom doors including bathrooms, cafeteria, office, and gates are locked. Students and staff are kept away from doors and windows. All blinds are closed. Lights are kept on.Attendance is taken. Everyone remains quiet. School has a internal communication system in place.

Shelter-in-Place is similar to a lockdown, except that the students and staff are allowed to move around inside their classroom. They are allowed to have organized and supervised restroom breaks, medical attention, food, and water if necessary. No one is allowed in or out of the building.

The decision to go from a lockdown to a shelter-in-place will be a joint decision made by the APS Police Department , the principal and the appropriate superintendent. This decision will be made only when APS School Police have confirmed that there is no imminent danger to the students or staff of the affected school.

Parent notification during a Lockdown or Shelter in Place

The School Messenger communication system will be used to inform and update parents. Parents are not allowed on campus until the lockdown is lifted.

**It is critical the school have all working parent phone numbers.
